OGS is an all-volunteer organization. Our members support OGS by participating on committees, at the library, or virtually, on a number of projects and events. If you are interested in participating in any of the following committees, just contact the committee chair or the President for more information and when the next meeting will be held. New volunteers are always welcome!
Certificates Committee
The certificates committee reviews and processes all Oregon Pioneer and Early Settler certificate applications and materials submitted, issues certificates, and works with the submitter if additional information is required. They answer questions from anyone interested in applying for either certificate, create the files, and add information to the databases.
Education Committee
The education committee plans classes and workshops for the year, recruits new member instructors, creates and distributes class schedules, and monitors class evaluations to gather suggestions for improvement and new topics. The committee meets on the first Sunday of each month at 1:00 pm.
Finance Committee
The finance committee works to raise funding for larger projects, such as the purchase of computers or other library equipment, and to increase long-term donations to support OGS in the future. They research and apply for grants, organize the annual campaign, review OGS finances, and look at long-term financial planning for OGS.
We can always use volunteers for this committee. If you are interested, contact Dawn Carlile
Fundraising Committee
The fundraising committee manages fundraising activities for OGS. Activities include garage sales, craft sales, surplus book sales, and the sale of merchandise such as OGS T-shirts in the library and at events. They set up and staff tables at OGS seminars and work with Project Outreach on other events. The committee meets on the third Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.
Journal Committee
The Journal committee writes and edits articles for publication in the Journal, lays out and formats the Journal, and sends it to the printer.
Library Acquisitions Committee
The acquisitions committee reviews materials donated to the library and determines whether they should be added to our collections. All physical items donated to OGS are reviewed and processed by the Acquisitions Committee. These include books, periodicals, microfilm, CDs, genealogical research, photographs, office supplies, furniture, and more. Members of the committee review each item to determine if the item can be used by OGS and, in the case of periodicals and other items, forward them to the appropriate committee. For other items to be added to the library collection, committee members catalog the items, enter them in the library database, and prepare them to be placed on the shelves by printing labels, attaching checkout card pockets, etc.
Library Book Repair Committee
The book repair committee keeps the library's collection in good repair. From simple torn pages to a new book cover, these volunteers do it all. Training is provided. They meet during the day on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month.
Library Family Newsletters Committee
The family newsletter committee processes our family newsletter subscriptions, exchanges, and donations for the shelves. The family newsletters are cataloged, labeled, put in folders, and placed on the shelves. As the collection expands the newsletters must be moved on the shelves to allow room for more to be added.

The surplus books committee maintains surplus books for sale in the library. When books are removed from the OGS collection, they are deaccessioned by removing check-out cards, stamping "withdrawn" inside the books, researching a sale price, adding them to the surplus books database, and storing them on the website. They select books to be displayed and sold at seminars, staff the surplus books sales table, write receipts, make changes, and following the seminar, they update the database and website.
Library Technology Committee
The technology committee updates and maintains our computers, software, and virus programs, advises the Board on potential problems and solutions, and provides input on software and computer equipment purchases.
Library Vertical Files Committee
The library vertical files committee processes loose papers, handouts, articles, and other items stored in the locality, subject, and surname vertical files. The Locality Vertical File contains items regarding a locality, whether a town, city, county, state, country, or region. The Subject Vertical File contains items. The Surname Vertical File contains items regarding genealogy research, letters, photos, etc., that are filed by surname.
Each item is labeled and placed in the appropriate file folder in the locality, subject, and surname vertical file cabinet. They create file folders and print labels for new categories when needed, and maintain a database of every locality and subject category, and maintain a database of every surname in the surname file cabinets. If you are interested, contact Dawn Carlile.
